LAO vs RAO
Describes where the image intensifier (detector) sits relative to the patient. LAO = patient's left side; RAO = patient's right.
CRA vs CAU
Cranial = detector tilted toward the head, looking down on the heart. Caudal = tilted toward the feet, looking up.
Why so many views?
The coronaries overlap from any single angle. Combining projections eliminates foreshortening and uncovers lesions hidden by overlap.
